Redemption rate increased for small plastic bottles

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E – Effective Friday, a new redemption rate for small plastic beverage containers weighing 17 ounces or less is being offered at all HI-5 bottle redemption centers across the state.

To qualify for the new rate of $1.13-1/2 cents per pound, consumers are required to separate their small bottles from larger plastic bottles. The mixed plastic bottle rate of 87-1/2 cents per pound will be paid for loads that are not separated.

Redemption rates for aluminum and glass beverage containers remain the same. Consumers receive $1.58 per pound for aluminum containers and 11-1/2 cents a pound for glass containers.

While weighing is quick and convenient, consumers also have the option of requesting that their empty beverage containers be hand counted. In April, the limit on the number of containers that can be hand counted increased from 50 to 200.
