Ala Wai School to open time capsule on Monday

Advertiser Staff

A group of gifted and talented students return to Ala Wai School on Monday and will open a time capsule they buried seven years ago to commemorate the turn of the century.

The former students committed to return to unearth the capsule when they became seniors. Many students have left the Islands, but eight will appear for this special ceremony.

Current GT students at Ala Wai School will bury a new time capsule that will reflect the current happenings at the school.

The capsule opening is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at the school.

Ala Wai Principal Charlotte Unni said the seniors are excited about Monday's event as they reflect back seven years. So are the current Ala Wai students.

"It was the year of Y2K when skepticism of the economy abounded and the excitement of new innovations, merriment and celebrations prevailed," said Kiana Dang, Ala Wai student council president. "Seven years have passed quickly and we look forward to capturing those special moments back in the year 2000 at Ala Wai School."

Former principal Judith Saranchock will be on hand, along with Jackie Chun, former parent and composer who will lead the students in the school song which she composed.
