Kemp might leave WAC champ Nevada for NBA

Associated Press

RENO, Nev. — Nevada star Marcelus Kemp said he would stay in the NBA draft and leave school if he receives assurances of being drafted by the early second round.

"That would give me a better chance, a better shot (of making the NBA)," the guard from Seattle told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Kemp and his Wolf Pack teammate, Ramon Sessions, have declared for the June 28 draft. But because they didn't hire agents, both players could return to Nevada for their senior seasons if the withdraw from the draft by June 18.

Kemp and Sessions played on the same team at the NBA pre-draft camp at Lake Buena Vista, Fla., this past week.

"I did everything pretty well," said Kemp, who averaged 14.3 points in three games. "I was getting feedback from the scouts. They knew I could score, so I tried to score in other ways and do other things."

Kemp was a first-team all-Western Athletic Conference choice last season, while Sessions was a second-team all-WAC pick.

Nevada star Nick Fazekas was among top players who missed the camp. He played as a senior last season after declaring for the NBA draft and withdrawing after he wasn't assured of being a first-round selection.

Only first-round NBA contracts are guaranteed.
