DePaul ousts Arizona State in women's world series

OKLAHOMA CITY — Sandy Vojik homered and drove in three runs as DePaul eliminated Arizona State from the Women's College World Series with a 3-1 win today.

Vojik hit a two-run home run off Sun Devils starter Katie Burkhart (35-13) in the fifth inning and added an RBI single in the seventh to give the 14th-seeded Blue Demons a 3-0 lead.

Rhiannon Baca drove in the only run for Arizona State (54-17) with a single in the bottom of the seventh off Tracie Adix (22-3). Michelle Smith had two hits and scored for the Sun Devils.

Adix allowed five hits and one walk while striking out three. DePaul (47-12) advanced to face defending champion Arizona, the No. 1 seed, in another of the four elimination games scheduled today.

Burkhart gave up six hits and walked one. She had nine strikeouts.

NCAA batting leader Kaitlin Cochran, who was walked in all three of her plate appearances in Arizona State's 2-0 loss to Northwestern in the opening round, was moved to the leadoff spot and went 1-for-3 with a single.
