Waimea man, 24, dies in Kona car crash

Advertiser Staff

A 24-year-old Waimea man died Friday morning in a single-car accident in Kona.

Police responding to a 4:45 a.m. call determined that a 1995 Jeep Wrangler traveling south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway ran off the right side of the road and overturned .9 miles north of the 88-mile marker.

The driver and sole occupant, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Kona Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 7:38 a.m. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is the 14th traffic fatality this year compared with the same number at this time last year.
