OKLAHOMA CITY Caitlin Lowe had a two-run double and Taryne Mowatt hurled a two-hit shutout as defending national champion Arizona beat DePaul 3-0 today in an elimination game in the Women's College World Series.
Lowe's fifth-inning double off Tracie Adix scored K'Lee Arredondo and Adrienne Acton and sent Arizona (46-13-1) into a matchup with Washington tomorrow. Top-seeded Arizona would need to beat Washington twice to advance to the tournament's championship round.
In elimination games earlier today, DePaul beat Arizona State 3-1 and Baylor beat Big 12 Conference rival Texas A&M 7-4. Baylor and second-seeded Northwestern played late today in another elimination game, with the winner to play Tennessee tomorrow.
Against DePaul, Mowatt (38-11) allowed singles to Sandy Vojik in the sixth and Kate Sheaks in the seventh. Mowatt fanned five batters and walked two.
Adix (22-4) allowed seven hits in five innings for DePaul (47-13). Arizona scored an insurance run against reliever Stephanie Blagaich on Chelsie Mesa's RBI single.
In the Baylor-Texas A&M game, Courtney Oberg hit a three-run home run and Ashley Monceaux had three hits as the Bears (51-15) beat the Aggies (46-14) for the third time this season.
Oberg's eighth home run of the season off Amanda Scarborough (26-10) highlighted a four-run third inning that broke open the game for the Bears.
Texas A&M's Megan Gibson hit a solo home run off Lisa Ferguson (26-8) in the first inning, but Chelsi Lake put the Bears ahead to stay with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning.
