An 8-year-old boy from San Antonio died today at Maui Memorial Medical Center after being injured in a traffic accident on Honoapililani Highway near Ukumehame Wayside Park on the island's west side.

The boy was identified as Will Smith. He was pronounced dead at 1:43 p.m., nearly five hours after the accident was reported.

Maui vehicular homicide investigators said Smith was a passenger in a car driven by his mother, Susan Moulton, which was struck by a blue 2003 Mazda that had crossed the center line.

The driver of the Mazda was Lahaina-bound and had lost control of her car after overtaking another vehicle, police said. She veered off the roadway onto the a dirt shoulder, brought the car back onto the highway but crossed left of center and collided with the passenger side of the car Smith was in, they said.

The Mazda ended up on the shoulder of the roadway, where police said it struck two unattended parked vehicles.

Moulton and the Mazda driver were treated at Maui Memorial and released.
