Wai'anae Coast residents urged to conserve water

Advertiser Staff

The Board of Water Supply today urged residents along the Wai'anae Coast to conserve water as crews repair a break in a main line that supplies the area.

The underground break was discovered about 7:30 a.m. today along Farrington Highway across from the Kahe Point power plant after crews detected a rapid drop in the water level at a reservoir in Lualualei.

Homes and businesses in Honokai Hale and Nanakuli were most affected, experiencing little or no water pressure, according to Tracy Burgo, a spokeswoman for the agency.

She didn't have an estimate on how many customers were affected, but said that 9,000 homes and businesses are served along the entire Leeward Coast.

Burgo said the 24-inch-wide concrete line, which was installed in 1961, should be fixed by morning rush hour tomorrow if everything goes according to plan. Agency officials suspect that the age of the line contributed to the break.

Until repairs are completed, the agency is asking residents from Honokai Hale to Makaha to conserve water.
