Michigan ousts No. 1 Vanderbilt in NCAA baseball play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Pinch-hitter Alan Oaks homered off Vanderbilt ace David Price in the top of the 10th inning and Michigan beat the overall No. 1 seed Commodores 4-3 tonight to advance to the NCAA tournament's super regionals.

Price (11-1), a left-hander starter projected as one of the top picks in this week's amateur baseball draft, pitched the ninth and 10th innings in relief.

Adam Abraham (5-1) earned the win in relief, and Michael Powers got the save with a perfect 10th.

Vanderbilt (54-13) tied the game 3-3 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Flaherty and a run-scoring single by Matt Meingaser.

Nate Recknagel hit a two-run homer for second-seeded Michigan (42-17). Pedro Alvarez homered for the Commodores.

The Wolverines will play the winner of the Charlottesville Regional in next weekend's super regionals. The Charlottesville title game between Oregon State and Virginia was scheduled for Tuesday.

Charlottesville Regional

Oregon St. 5, Rutgers 2

Oregon St. 5, Virginia 3

The defending national champions advanced to the regional championship game with two elimination wins.

The Beavers (41-18) defeated Rutgers 5-2 in the first game, then beat undefeated Virginia 5-3 to force a title game between those teams tomorrow.

Chris Hopkins' leadoff homer started a three-run eighth-inning rally for third-seeded Oregon State against top-seeded Virginia (45-15). Jason Ogata and John Wallace followed with RBI singles that gave Oregon State a 4-3 lead. Joe Paterson (9-6), the second of four Oregon State pitchers, relieved in the fifth and struck out five in 3 2-3 hitless innings.

Jorge Reyes allowed two runs over six innings for Oregon State in the win over Rutgers (42-21).

Chapel Hill Regional

Josh Horton's two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning gave North Carolina its second straight come-from-behind victory and a berth in the super regionals.

The top-seeded Tar Heels (51-12) trailed 5-4 in the ninth when third-seeded Western Carolina (42-20) pulled closer Greg Holland after he walked two. Horton greeted replacement Chris Masters with a single to the gap in right-center that scored Matt Cavasinni and Dustin Ackley.

North Carolina closer Andrew Carignan worked the ninth to earn his 14th save.

The Tar Heels will face South Carolina in the super regionals.

Round Rock Regional

UC Irvine 9, Texas 6

Tyler Vaughn's two-run double highlighted the three-run eighth inning for the second-seeded Anteaters (43-15-1). The game picked up from the bottom of the seventh inning after rain suspended play on Sunday with second-seeded UC Irvine holding a 6-5 lead over the top-seeded Longhorns (46-17).

Columbia, Mo. Regional

Louisville 16, Missouri 6

Chris Dominguez drove in seven runs with a grand slam a three-run shot and the third-seeded Cardinals (44-21) advanced to the super regionals with a season-high 21 hits. Dominguez homered four times in the last three games. Top-seeded Missouri (42-18) hosted a regional for the first time.

Myrtle Beach Regional

Clemson 15, Coastal Carolina 3

Andy D'Alessio went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Marquez Smith had a career-high four hits and drove in three runs to lead the second-seeded Tigers (41-21) into the super regionals against Mississippi State. finished with three homers among 20 hits.

The top-seeded Chanticleers (50-13) have never advanced past the regionals in seven NCAA appearances.

Texas A&M 5, Louisiana-Lafayette 2

Kyle Thebeau allowed seven hits and two unearned runs and struck out 13 as the Aggies advanced to the super regionals for the first time in three years.

Texas A&M (48-17) lost to Louisiana-Lafayette (47-17) on Saturday but rebounded to win the regional with three straight victories, including two over the second-seeded Ragin' Cajuns.

The 13 strikeouts were a career high for Thebeau (3-5). Top-seeded Texas A&M scored four runs in the second inning, including a leadoff homer by Craig Stinson.

The Aggies will play No. 2 overall seed Rice this weekend.

Columbia, S.C. Regional

South Carolina 11, Charlotte 6

Phil Disher's grand slam in the fourth inning gave the Gamecocks the lead for good and they advanced to the super regionals for the seventh time in eight years.

Disher's grand slam gave South Carolina a 6-5 lead. It was Disher's 15th homer of the season and the 110th for South Carolina, which leads the nation in homers.

Charlotte (49-12) had 15 hits, but left 11 men on base in the game that was delayed nearly three homers by a thunderstorm in the third inning.

South Carolina (45-18) will be at North Carolina this weekend.

Wichita Regional

Wichita St. 3, Arizona 0

Travis Banwart allowed two hits over 7 2-3 innings and Tyler Weber homered in a three-run fifth inning to lead the Shockers (53-20) to the super regionals for the first time since 1996. Wichita State had lost in four straight regional championship games.

Banwart (10-5), relieved early in Friday's loss to New Orleans, struck out 12 to tie a career high.

The top-seeded Shockers beat second-seeded Arizona (42-17) on Sunday night to force the championship game. They will play Cal-Irvine in the super regionals.
