Overall crime figures decreased in 2006, with 40,943 reported crimes in Honolulu compared with 44,953 in 2005.

There were 2,722 violent crimes in Honolulu last year, compared to 2,570 in 2005.

The only FBI violent crime category that did not see an increase last year was rape.

According to 2006 FBI statistics, there were 17 murders, 229 rapes, 947 robberies, 1,529 assaults, 38,221 property crimes including 5,463 burglaries, 26,469 thefts, 6,289 car thefts, and 580 arsons.

The increased violence follows a national trend in which violent crimes increased by 1.3 percent from 2005.
