Marathoner, 88, speaking to Quarterback Club today

Gladys "Glady" Burrill, an 88-year-old Oregon power walker, not only won her age group at last year's Honolulu Marathon, but she finished nearly 34 minutes faster than she did during her first in 2004.

Burrill now wants to go for a fourth-straight finish next December shortly after her birthday. Marathon organizers have given her an early incentive with the bib number "89."

The great-grandmother and part-time Island resident is scheduled to speak at 11:30 a.m. this morning to the Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel's main ballroom.

Just before her first marathon, Burrill told The Advertiser she hoped to be an example for younger people who shun exercise and the outdoors.

"I'd like them to care more about their health," she said. "Anybody can afford to walk. It's healthy and it's good therapy. Sometimes it seemed like the weight of the world was on my shoulders when I started, but when I got back I was so invigorated."

Her marathon time last year: 8:36:25.
