Copter totes 60-foot utility pole to Hawai'i Kai ridge

Hawaiian Electric Company Inc. this morning transferred a 60-foot utility pole by helicopter to Kamehame Ridge in Hawai'i Kai where it will be installed tomorrow.

"We didn't expect to get the pole up there on the ridge this fast," said HECO spokeswoman Janeen Loose. HECO had planned to install the 2,500-pound pole Wednesday.

The helicopter also delivered nine crew members and equipment at 8:30 this morning to rugged areas where they prepared lines for the transfer, dug holes and cleared away brush. If weather permits, the crew will continue work tomorrow and Wednesday.

The utility pole will replace a weather-damaged pole currently on the ridge.

In compliance with Federal Aviation Administration and HECO regulations, the helicopter did not fly over residential or populated areas when moving the crew and equipment.
