Hawaii golfers fail to qualify for U.S. Open

Three Hawaii golfers failed to qualify for the U.S. Open, after coming up short in sectional qualifying yesterday in Murrietta, Calif.Alex Ching, a Punahou School junior, shot 74-74148 at the Bear Creek Golf Club; Casey Watabu, the 2006 Public Links champion from Kaua'i, shot 81-78159; and Dugal Milne, a pro at Makena on Maui, shot 75-85160.
The top four from Bear Creek qualified for the U.S. Open, which will be June 14-17 at Oakmont, Pa., Country Club.
Kevin Sutherland, of Sacramento, Calif., was the medalist at Bear Creek, shooting 65-72137.
