Hawaii golfers fail to qualify for U.S. Open

Three Hawaii golfers failed to qualify for the U.S. Open, after coming up short in sectional qualifying yesterday in Murrietta, Calif.

Alex Ching, a Punahou School junior, shot 74-74—148 at the Bear Creek Golf Club; Casey Watabu, the 2006 Public Links champion from Kaua'i, shot 81-78—159; and Dugal Milne, a pro at Makena on Maui, shot 75-85—160.

The top four from Bear Creek qualified for the U.S. Open, which will be June 14-17 at Oakmont, Pa., Country Club.

Kevin Sutherland, of Sacramento, Calif., was the medalist at Bear Creek, shooting 65-72—137.
