State to unveil Ala Wai boat harbor parking plan

Advertiser Staff

The state will present its plan to resolve parking problems at the crowded Ala Wai small boat harbor at a public meeting Wednesday evening.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will release the results of a mail survey of 560 harbor tenants and the details of its final plan. The plan was crafted after two public meetings and the survey.

"This final plan has taken into account everybody's input. It is practical and the best solution to meet the various needs and issues with fairness," said Allan Smith, the department's interim director, in a statement.

According to the department, the state will issue a revocable permit to a vehicle parking company that will manage vehicles parked at the harbor daily. A parking lot entry and exit gate and toll booths will lead to the marina. A fence or barrier would separate the marina from the heliport.

Parking at the heliport would be free for recreational and harbor users, but would be closed during the evening and overnight hours.

The meeting is set from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Hawai'i Prince Hotel's Mauna Loa ballroom.
