  • For the third time, the HAWAI'I VISITORS AND CONVENTION BUREAU has been given the Planners' Choice Award from Meeting News magazine. Meeting planners representing corporations, associations and incentives voted for HVCB on the basis of being "top of mind" with excellence in meeting its needs. For the 2006 award, HVCB was evaluated on the expertise of its staff, quality of services provided and timely response. Meeting News is published 18 times annually to a national circulation of 50,000 meeting, convention, incentive and tradeshow professionals.

  • Twelve awards of excellence and 20 awards of merit have been announced in the 2007 'ILIMA AWARDS, given local communications professionals by the local chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. Awards of excellence in various categories included:

    Writing: Moani Wright-Van Alst, of Communications Pacific, for the entry, "Island Air Soars Into a New Era." Publication Design: Laurel Bowers Husain, of Punahou School, for the entry, "Giving to Punahou 2006." Illustration: Beth Tokioka, of County of Kaua'i, for the entry, "Kaua'i Made Logo." Internal Publication: Helene Waihee, of Castle Medical Center, for the entry, "Castle Medical Center - Ulupono - To Grow Well and Flourish." Special Print Communication: Kimberly Vierra, of The Hawai'i Community Foundation, for the entry, "Hawaii Community Foundation 2007 Annual Report - Because It's Our Home," and Bob Bannister, of Hawai'i Pacific University, for the entry, "The Lion in Winter" Theatre Collateral. Video/Multimedia/Electronic Program: Barbara Pleadwell, of Hastings & Pleadwell: A Communication Company, for the entry, Hastings & Pleadwell's Web site, and Karen Hamada, of Communications Pacific, for the entry, Harold K.L. Castle Foundation Web site. Communication Program: Barbara Pleadwell, for the entry, the Smoke-Free Hawai'i Campaign. Marketing Communication: Jasmin Rodriguez, of Castle Medical Center, for the entry, "Castle Medical Center: Advertising Campaign," and Jill Kamada, of Communications Pacific, for the entry, "Canopy Home, Canopy Business."

  • MARTIN GARAGE DOORS HAWAI'I has been honored as the International Dealer of the Year, the only award given by Martin Door Manufacturing. The Honolulu-based affiliate is owned by Claude Thompson, managed by Elizabeth and Bobby Reynolds and has installers on four islands.

  • Chris Tatum, general manager of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, has been named 2007 Marriott International General Manager of the Year. The Hawai'i native was praised for improving guest satisfaction and fostering goodwill in the community through Marriott's "Spirit to Serve Our Communities" corporate program. Tatum was named general manager of Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa last March.
