Learn culture behind the lo'i

Advertiser Staff

Windward residents will have a chance to get down and dirty in a taro lo'i on Saturday at the Ulupo Heiau Ho'ike, sponsored by the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club.

This year's theme is the Hawaiian proverb Ma ka hana ka 'ike, or "in doing, we learn."

"There's no better way to teach ahupua'a management and the cultural importance of kalo cultivation than to get into the lo'i kalo," said Dr. Chuck Burrows, the club's vice president.

Cultural demonstrations also will teach participants lei making, coconut weaving, spear throwing and poi pounding.

The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
