Oregon St. beats Virginia to advance to Super Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Lonnie Lechelt's solo home run sparked a three-run second inning as defending national champion Oregon State beat Virginia, 7-3, in the Charlottesville regional and advanced to the Super Regional.The Beavers (42-18) won for the third time in two days, and beat the Cavaliers for the second straight time, to keep alive their hope of defending their title. Oregon State will host Michigan starting Saturday in the Super Regional. Michigan ousted No. 1 Vanderbilt yesterday.
Oregon State beat Hawaii in a regional last season en route to winning the national title.
Virginia, hosting a regional for the third time in four years, has never made it out of the regional. The Cavaliers were in their seventh trip to the tournament.
Lechelt hit his second home run of the weekend leading off the second inning to tie it at 3. The Beavers then loaded the bases with one out and Darwin Barney hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left that scored Jordan Lennerton, who had doubled. A single to right by Jason Ogata gave the Beavers a 5-3 advantage.
The Beavers added two insurance runs on a sixth-inning, two-run single by Ogata, who was 3-for-4 and drove in four. Chris Hopkins was 2-for-4 and scored three times.
Mike Stutes lasted 4 1-3 innings for Oregon State before Eddie Kunz (3-1) came on. Joe Paterson, who won yesterday's game against the Cavaliers (45-16) with 3 2-3 hitless innings in relief, pitched three scoreless innings for the save.
Casey Lambert (3-3) started for top-seeded Virginia and allowed five runs in just 1 1-3 innings. The Cavaliers used six pitchers in all and allowed 12 hits.
