Maui man's $200 film to air on HBO Family June 17

Maui-born and -raised Destin Cretton will see his short film "Drakmar: A Vassal's Journey" air on HBO Family on Father's Day. Now earning his master's degree in film and television from San Diego State University, Cretton, with his filmmaking partner Lowell Frank, made the short feature documentary for $200 and sold it to HBO. It will premiere as a Father's Day special.

Two years ago, Frank and Cretton began work on their film, originally a profile of Colin Taylor, a 14-year-old boy who was highly involved in a medieval re-enactment group called The Kingdom of Terre Nueve.

"After we finished the short, we still had a lot of questions about Colin, particularly regarding his life at home," said Cretton in a written statement. "We knew there was a bigger story there."

The budding filmmakers picked up shooting again in January 2005, working with a fairly inexpensive digital camera.

"We wanted to keep things simple, small camera, small crew, natural light," said Frank. "It helped to keep our subjects comfortable, and our budget low."

The filmmakers tracked Taylor for about 4 months while he continued his medieval re-enactment activities and dealt with problems at school and home. Then came the previously unforeseen climax. As in the recent documentary "The Cats of Mirikitani," in which filmmaker Linda Hattendorf reconnects her subject with his long-lost sister, Cretton and Frank introduce Taylor to his biological father for the first time.

The duo sent their film to festivals, winning an award for Best Direction in a Documentary from the Trenton Film Festival and Best Documentary from Comic-Con International 2006 in San Diego.

Through a chance meeting with Bennett Miller, director of the Oscar-winning "Capote," Cretton and Frank were able to submit their film to HBO.

Cretton and Frank have dedicated the film to their own fathers and are looking forward to seeing their little movie on national television.

"Drakmar: A Vassal's Journey" will premiere on HBO Family on Father's Day, June 17 (5:45 p.m., 8:45 p.m.), and will play four more times throughout the month of June.
