Major accidents down 18 percent on the Big Island

DUI roadblocks have led to an 11 percent increase in drunk driving arrests on the Big Island in 2007, but major accidents on the Big Island are down 18 percent overall compared to the same time period in 2006, police said.Through Monday, there have been 889 major accidents on the Big Island, compared to 1,083 during the same period in 2006. Police also reported 16 fatalities on the Big Island, two more than last year at the same time. The DUI roadblocks and patrols have led to 559 arrests this year, up from 503 in 2006. Last week, 32 people were arrested from drunk driving, three who were involved in accidents and seven who were under the age of 21.
