Organizers of the free event, to be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Kahili Golf Course in Waikapu, said the concept of smart growth emphasizes efficient land use, open-space preservation, creation of transportation options and less dependence on autos, building walkable communities and mixing housing and commercial uses.

Professional planner Bob McNamara of the National Association of Realtors will lead the presentation.
