HECO sponsors Friday conference on climate change

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Electric Company will sponsor a daylong, public discussion Friday on climate change and the environmental, social and economic effects of global warming on Hawai'i.

The free event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the State Capitol Auditorium.

"With the passage of legislation such as House Bill 226 mandating greenhouse gas reduction, movies such as Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth,' and the very real experience of changing weather patterns, global warming has become an urgent issue for all of us," said Robbie Alm, Hawaiian Electric senior vice president for public affairs. "This is an opportunity for all of us to learn from experts to be able to make wise choices for our future."

Morning sessions will begin with background on climate change, including an overview of the global greenhouse gas science, how climate change affects Hawai'i, and the impact of global warming on local ocean levels. The second part of the morning will focus on environmental, utility, legislative and economic policy implications for Hawai'i.
