Arizona QB Leinart is a hit — on baseball field, too

Associated Press

TEMPE, Ariz. — Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart stole the show when he, wide receiver Anquan Boldin and head coach Ken Whisenhunt took batting practice with the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The left-handed quarterback batted righty and hit three home runs, including two in his final three swings. The last homer was estimated at 400 feet. Whisenhunt and Boldin each hit several to the warning track, but neither put one out of the park in the session before the Diamondbacks' 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

"I haven't played baseball since I was 13 or 14 years old," the second-year quarterback said. "This was a blast. It is kind of like being a kid again, walking out into the ballpark to take batting practice in a big league stadium. I'll tell this story for a long time and the homers will get longer every time I do."

Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin was impressed with the way the three performed at the plate.

"To come in and have to do that, you can tell they're all good athletes," Melvin said. "It's difficult to do, just like if we were to try to play football. You can see the swings and contact got better and better."
