Box jellyfish expected to arrive by weekend

By CATHERINE E. TOTH
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

The monthly influx of box jellyfish is expected to arrive on Saturday and Sunday, according to the city's Ocean Safety Division.

Those who are allergic to the marine stings or who don't want to be stung should stay out of the water.

The most commonly affected area is Waikiki Beach, especially in the waters 'ewa of the Kapahulu groin.

Other near-shore waters that have been affected include Hanauma Bay, Poka'i Bay, Makaha Surfing Beach and Waimea Bay.

Last month more than 750 box jellyfish — three times the average — were found in Waikiki. Lifeguards reported 46 stings.

The city also closed Hanauma Bay after finding more than 20 box jellyfish on the shoreline in less than an hour. Two dozen more were spotted in the shallow water. No one reported getting stung.

Anyone stung by box jellyfish are advised to flush the sting area with copious amounts of white vinegar. If you experience difficulty breathing, muscle cramps or spasms, or persistent paint, you should seek immediate medical attention.
