Big Island brushfire destroys 4 acres of woodland

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters on the Big Island fought a brushfire along Kapualena Air Strip Road, four miles north of Honoka'a Waipio Road, for nearly six hours yesterday.

Two engines with 11 firefighters responded to the call at 1:37 p.m.

The brushfire consumed approximately four acres of woodland area of low dry brush and pine trees. It was deemed under control at 6 p.m. and out at 9 p.m. The Hawaii County Fire Department said because of the location of the fire it was inaccessible for HFD vehicles to reach, but no structures or personnel were involved.

Two helicopters were called to dump water on the blaze and long hoses were used on the ground.

The area was monitored through the night for flareups.

The Honoka'a station fought this fire. Earlier, firefighters from the Pahala station extinguished another brushfire along Highway 11.

Cause of both fires hasn't been determined.
