School's out for summer

Advertiser Staff

School's out! Students at nearly all public schools across the state heard that glorious bell announcing summer vacation at noon today.

This is the first year the state Department of Education has implemented a uniform calendar so that students at different schools start and end classes with their peers.

Students will have a 52-day break before returning to school on July 30. Teachers, whose break starts officially after tomorrow, will return on July 26.

While the 2007-2008 calendar has already been set, the DOE is still exploring the possibility of extending summer vacation by a week in 2009.

Allowing more time for summer school, as well as school repairs and maintenance, are among the many reasons why the state is considering extending the break, said Greg Knudsen, DOE spokesman.

The calendar is set two years in advance, Knudsen said, and the 2008-2009 calendar should be finalized later this fall.
