Kimberly Kim shoots 1-over 73 at LPGA Championship

Advertiser Staff

Kimberly Kim, a 15-year-old former Big Island resident, shot at a 1-over 73 today at the LPGA Championship at Havre de Grace, Md.

Kim, the field's lone amateur who moved to Arizona to enhance her golf career, had two birdies and three bogeys in her 36-37 round.

Starting on the back nine, Kim had a birdie and bogey to make the turn at even-par 36.

But she bogeyed the first and third holes on her back nine to fall to 2-over. She later birdied the par-5 No. 8 hole for a back-nine score of 37.

She has a good chance of making the cut with the early leaders scores hovering around 4-under and 5-under.

Kim played in the morning round with much of the field, including Michelle Wie, teeing off in the afternoon.

The LPGA Championship is the second major tournament on the LPGA Tour calendar.

Kimberly Kim earned her way into the LPGA's second major by becoming the youngest U.S. Women's Amateur champion in history last year. She was also the youngest ever to make the U.S. Women's Open cut in 2006 and is coming off victories in the prestigious ReBath Heather Farr Classic and Thunderbird International Junior.

Kim will return to the U.S. Women's Open later this month by virtue of her U.S. Amateur title.
