Wilson drops to 23rd, McLachlin nears PGA event cut

Associated Press

Dean Wilson dropped into a tie for 23rd place after shooting a 1-over par 71 in the second round of the PGA Stanford St. Jude Championship at Memphis, Tenn., today.

Wilson, a Castle High alum, was tied for eighth after an even-par 70 in yesterday's opening round. Wilson trails leader Adam Scott by eight strokes. Scott continued to lead the field after a second-round 4-under 66 brought his two-day total to 7-under 133. Brian Gay is one stroke behind at 134.

Parker McLachlin, a Punahou graduate, was 1-over through 15 holes before play was suspended due to darkness. McLachlin will resume the round tomorrow with 25 other golfers.

McLachlin is tied for 58th place, one stroke ahead of the projected cutoff mark. The top 70 players and ties advance to the third round. McLachlin had a 73 in the opening round.

But the talk of the day was John Daly's messy personal life.

Daly, playing on a sponsor's exemption, accused his wife of attacking him with a steak knife this morning. Daly told authorities his wife tried stab him with a steak knife, and the golfer had red marks on his cheeks when he showed up to play.

Daly called police about 6 a.m., Shelby County Sheriff's department spokesman Steve Shular said. When deputies arrived, wife Sherrie and the couple's children were not there. Deputies could not find the knife he claimed she used.

Daly, 41, has won two majors — the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open — but his play has been overshadowed by two trips to alcohol rehab, outrageous tales of gambling losses, trashed hotel rooms and suspensions.
