'Surf's Up' opens in theaters today

Advertiser Staff

Move over, Shrek.

It's time for some more animated surfing penguins who have distinct Hawai'i feel to them.

"Surf's Up," the highly anticipated animated surf movie, opens in theaters today and is filled with ties to the Aloha state.

Two island recording acts and the voices of real-life pro surfers Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Sal Masekela are featured in the flick.

'Ukulele soloist Herb Ohta Jr.'s "Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi," a Lena Machado composition, and Nedward and Keoki Ka'apana's "Honeysuckle Rose," the oldie co-composed by "Fats" Waller, are on the soundtrack.

The tunes can be heard on Ohta's "Pure and Simple" album and Ka'apana's "Pana" disc, respectively.

The late Johnny Noble's arrangement of "Hawaiian War Chant," performed by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, also makes a splash, along with contemporary tracks by the likes of Green Day, Incubus, 311, Sugar Ray, Pearl Jam and Lauryn Hill, with classic hits by Brian Wilson, Percy Faith and The Surfaris also featured.
