No 13th on Friday, UH football to play 12-game season

The University of Hawai'i football team will play a 12-game regular season in 2007, UH athletic director Herman Frazier confirmed today.

UH failed to secure a 13th opponent today, Frazier's self-imposed final deadline. Frazier had said he had offers on the table to two teams, one of which was a member of a Bowl Chamionship Series conference. That offer was in the ballpark of $700,000, a package that included an appearance on an ESPN channel.

The Warriors already had confirmed games against 12 opponents. Under the NCAA's so-called "Hawai'i Exemption," the Warriors were allowed to play up to 13 regular-season games.

"After a long and exhaustive process that included discussions with several schools, no team we targeted for a 13th game would agree to play at UH in 2007," Frazier said in a statement. "Therefore, we will play a 12-game schedule this season. I want to thank WAC Commissioner Karl Benson and ESPN Vice President Dave Brown for their assistance in trying to identify a fifth contest for national television. We look forward to the exposure UH will receive from the four games already scheduled for ESPN or ESPN 2."

Hawai'i will open the 2007 season against Northern Colorado on Sept. 1 and play seven home games at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors have two open dates (Oct. 20 and Nov. 3) on the schedule.

"As coach (June) Jones stated last week, we will utilize the two open dates to prepare for the last stretch of games, which includes three tough WAC opponents, along with Washington," Frazier said.

UH closes its WAC season by playing Fresno State at home (Nov. 10), Nevada on the road (Nov. 17) and Boise State at home (Nov. 23). The Washington game is Dec. 1.
