SACRAMENTO, Calif. — University of Hawai'i junior Annett Wichmann placed ninth in the heptathlon with a lifetime-best and school-record 5,649 points at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sacramento State today.

The Jena, Germany native shattered her previous best total of 5,557 points, set last month in her gold-medal winning performance at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Fresno, Calif.

Wichmann began the day with a mark of 17 feet, 8.75 inches (5.40 meters) in the long jump, which dropped her from ninth place to 15th. Wichmann then had the day's third-best throw of 146-11 (44.78m) in the javelin, moving her up to 10th.

In the final event, Wichmann clocked in at 2:19.40 in the 800-meter run, the eighth fastest time. Her ninth-place total was one spot away from earning UH a team point.

Defending champion Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State, captured her second straight title with a total of 5,984 points.

Last year, Wichmann competed in her first NCAA Championship and placed 17th.
