Kalani graduate taken by Red Sox in MLB draft

He was picked in the 32nd round by the Boston Red Sox. He was the 983rd player taken overall.
Also, five other players with Hawai'i ties have been taken so far in today's MLB first-year player draft.
University of Hawai'i pitcher Tyler Davis was taken in the 21st round by the San Diego Padres. He was the 657th player selected overall.
Davis, who turns 22 on Aug. 15, completed his eligibility with UH as the team's closer. He was 6-2 with four saves and a 4.06 earned run average.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound side-arm right-hander came to UH from Santa Barbara Junior College.
Keoni Ruth, a second baseman at Concordia (Calif.), was drafted in the 22nd round by the San Diego Padres. He was the 687th overall pick.
Ruth, 22, completed his eligibility at NAIA Concordia after three seasons at the University of San Diego. He batted .339 with 16 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 29 RBIs playing second base.
He was first drafted in the 17th round by Kansas City out of Kamehameha in 2003. He was picked again in the 17th round last year by the Chicago Cubs.
UH pitcher Ian Harrington was picked in the 23rd round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was the 703rd overall player taken.
Harrington, 22, graduated last month, completing his eligibility in the process. The 6-0, 190-pound left-hander went 7-8 with a 4.35 earned run average this past season.
UH third baseman Justin Frash was picked in the 27th round by the Oakland Athletics. He was the 840th overall pick.
His father, Roger Frash, was a first-round pick by the New York Mets in 1980 of the January regular phase of the draft.
UH-Hilo junior right-hander Lars Knepper was picked in the 29th round by the San Francisco Giants. He was the 884th overall player taken.
