COMEDY: JUNE 15

Comics Kaleo Pilanca, Keni Hune, Big Steve and Mel Cabang, below, and host David Lee are bringing the laughs at a Father's Day show at the Makaha Resort & Golf Club. There'll be music, food and prizes, too. The event is a benefit for Na Keiki o Ka Mo'i Canoe Club, which is raising funds for the state championships and to repair its koa canoe.

Been missing Rebel Girl? The singer, right, and her band X-Factor moved to Los Angeles, but they're back for one show only. Also on the bill: Tempo Valley, Paula Fuga, Sewa Fare and Nadeshiko. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to GirlFest Hawaii, which aims to prevent domestic violence through education and art.

COMEDY: JUNE 17

Expect over-the-top local kine jokes from the "Portuguese Prince of Hawaiian comedy" Frank DeLima, right, as he entertains on Father's Day. He even writes on his Web site: "So what better way to thank your parents for wiping away your hanabata and kissing your boo-boos during small kid time than inviting them to see me!" He may sing a tune or two, dress in drag or bust out witty improv — you never know what to expect.

FAMILY TIES: JUNE 17-JULY 22

The Kids First! Film Festival, a project of the Coalition for Quality Children's Media, makes its debut at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa during the school's Centennial Celebration. Now in its eighth year, the film festival travels to more than 100 locations and offers sneak peaks at films from major studios, classic films, independents and shorts in a variety of styles including animation and live action. The films are evaluated by juries of adults and kids and must meet the Kids First! criteria of no gratuitous violence, no racial or cultural bias, no inappropriate content and no condescension toward children. "Cool Schools," "Tweens Feature Film," "Tails and Adventures" and "Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies," are a few films on the schedule.

CONCERT: JUNE 22

Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Kenny Rankin, whose musical career has spanned three decades, returns to Honolulu for an intimate performance at Mamiya Theatre. With a career beginning in the '60s, the pop singer's hits include "Peaceful," "It Had to Be You" and "Because of You." Two critically acclaimed albums, "Silver Morning" and "The Kenny Rankin Album," have been re-released. Rankin's last performance on the Island was in October 2005.

Island songstress Mihana, left, performs with Grammy Award winner Jeff Peterson on guitar, 'ukulele legend Bill Tapia, sax master David Choy, Ernie Provencher on bass and Abe Lagrimas on drums. Members of Kahala Moon and Puamana add to the concerts' lively blend of jazz, country, rock and Hawaiian melodies. Mihana's first album "Rust on the Moon" won a Na Hoku Hanohano award in 2003; her followup is "One Little Dream." Her next CD will be culled from the pair of concerts.

FESTIVAL: JUNE 29-JULY 1

The Windward side gets a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll when BayFest takes over the Marine base. Performing this year are Canadian rockers 3 Days Grace (June 29), country starlet Gretchen Wilson (right, June 30) and the legendary Alan Jackson (July 1). And there's the lifestyle expo, military displays, carnival rides, games, boat rides around Coconut Island, food, competitions and big fireworks shows.

Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated pop/rock band Huey Lewis and the News, known for hits such as "The Power of Love," "I Want a New Drug" and "Do You Believe in Love," is heading for the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The band is known for light-hearted and upbeat music from a working-class perspective — pretty much synonymous with the movie "Back to the Future."

FESTIVAL: JUNE 29-JULY 1

We knew the oh-so-popular Taste of Honolulu food festival and fundraiser would be saved, with a new name and sponsor. The three-day event is dubbed "The Flavors of Honolulu" and will include clothing and craft vendors in addition to the food booths. The nonprofit Abilities Unlimited takes over for Easter Seals Hawaii, which had organized the event for 15 years.

Here's what to expect:

  • Celebrity "What's Cooking" cook-offs with NFL legend Jesse Sapolu, entertainer Jimmy Borges, comedian Augie T and more.

  • Duet by Hawaii-born actress Tia Carrere and Grammy award winning producer Daniel Ho, 4 p.m. July 1.

  • A tribute to Don Ho, 8 p.m. June 30.

  • Participating restaurants include Ciao Mein, The Colony, Down to Earth, The Mandalay, Tony Roma's, Tudo de Bom and more.

    COMEDY: JULY 7

    Writer, actor, comedian Jim Gaffigan, left, brings his sold-out nationwide "Beyond the Pale" Comedy Central tour to Hawai'i. Gaffigan has established himself through performances on Comedy Central, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, special appearances on TV shows "Ed," "Sex in the City" and starring in the TBS comedy series "My Boys" and "That 70's Show." He was featured on Comedy Central's stand-up special "Beyond the Pale" in 2005, which became a best-selling DVD.
