Public comment sought on Lahaina Bypass plan

WAILUKU — The Maui County Council's Planning Committee will review the latest information on the long-planned Lahaina Bypass highway project at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Council Chamber, Committee Chair Gladys C. Baisa has announced.

Lahaina Bypass Now, which describes itself as "a community-based organization dedicated to solving West Maui's traffic problems," will present findings from a transportation workshop and commuter survey. In addition, the meeting provides an opportunity for members of the public to provide testimony to the committee regarding the Lahaina Bypass project, Baisa said.

"I strongly encourage interested members of the public to submit written and verbal testimony about the Lahaina Bypass," Baisa said. "I have been closely monitoring issues relating to West Maui traffic, in part by attending meetings sponsored by Lahaina Bypass Now.

"As the project appears to be finally progressing, now is a critical time for the Council's Planning Committee to hear from commuters, others concerned about improving transportation efficiency for West Maui and anyone else who wishes to comment on this critical project. Decisions relating to the Lahaina Bypass are to impact Maui's economy and environment for years to come," Baisa said.

The meeting is open to the public.
