Yale edges Harvard in regatta, snapping losing streak

Associated Press

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Yale narrowly won the 142nd Harvard-Yale Regatta today, snapping the Crimson's seven-year winning streak with the closest finish in 93 years.

The Bulldogs finished the 4-mile men's heavyweight crew race in 19:57.5, a half-second in front of Harvard.

Yale trailed by nearly two boat lengths with about a half-mile remaining, but a late push allowed the Bulldogs to overcome Harvard at the finish line. The Crimson had led the race virtually from the start.

It was the closest finish since 1914, when Yale edged Harvard by two-tenths of a second. It is Yale's first victory over its Ivy League rival since 1999.

Harvard has dominated the event in recent years, winning 20 of the last 23 regattas. The race was first held in 1852 on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee and is considered the nation's oldest intercollegiate sporting event.

Harvard leads the series 88-54.
