Lelie sidelined as 49ers end first week of camp

Former University of Hawai'i wideout Ashley Lelie, the San Francisco 49ers newly acquired receiver, ended the first week of the team's organized team activities yesterday on the sidelines.

Lelie has been held out since Monday because of an injured quad.

He was one of the top three 49er receivers being held out of OTAs.

Darrell Jackson, acquired from Seattle for a fourth-round draft pick, is not expected to make his return until training camp and trainers have been cautious with incumbent starter Arnaz Battle (hamstring).

"It's hard because I'll need those reps with those guys, but we do have plenty of time still in training camp," third-year quarterback Alex Smith said in an article on sf49ers.com.

Lelie, a former first-round draft choice of the Denver Broncos, was signed as a free agent in the off-season. He played last year with Atlanta.

On Tuesday, defensive end Melvin Oliver, who started 14 games as a rookie last season, torn his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Oliver made 50 tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown last season, but his role was expected to diminish this season in San Francisco's 3-4 defensive alignment.

The 49ers signed free agent defensive lineman Aubrayo Franklin in the offseason, and recently signed former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Sam Rayburn.
