Asashoryu topples fellow yokozuna Hakuho

Advertiser Staff

Asashoryu hoisted fellow yokozuna Hakuho out of the ring to win the first day of the Grand Sumo Tournament in Hawai'i.

The all-Mongolian final came after each sumotori had won four matches to set up the showdown.

With it, Asashoryu, who won the Mayor's Cup, repaid Hakuho who had beat him in the Natsu Basho finale a week ago in Tokyo to earn promotion to yokozuna.

Sunday's winner will earn the governor's Cup. If it is a sumotori other than Asashoryu, there will be a playoff for the Sakura Cup that symbolizes the overall tournament title.

An estimated 4,000 turned out for sumo's return after a 14-year absence.
