Wallach's son leads Fullerton by UCLA, into CWS

Associated Press

FULLERTON , Calif. — Matt Wallach, the son of former major leaguer Tim Wallach, hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning to help lead Cal State Fullerton past UCLA and into the College World Series for the second straight year.

With the game tied at 1, John Curtis led off the seventh with a single and moved to second on Chris Jones' sacrifice. Wallach followed with a single to left-center field that scored Curtis.

Clark Hardman had three hits, including a homer for the Titans (38-23), who improved to 13-4 in the super regionals and advanced to Omaha for the 15th time. They will play the winner of the Oregon State-Michigan series in the opening round.

The Bruins (37-24) had a chance to tie it in the ninth, but an overaggressive baserunning decision cost them. Justin Uribe hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a groundout. Ryan Babineau hit a grounder to third baseman Evan McArthur and Uribe took off for home. McArthur fielded the ball and threw to catcher John Curtis, who tagged Uribe out.

Bryan Harris then got Alden Carrithers to fly out for his third save. Adam Jorgenson (4-2), who relieved starter Jeff Kaplan in the seventh and got out of a jam, earned the win.

UCLA starter Gavin Brooks (6-7) struck out a career-high 12 batters in the loss.

The Titans begin the College World Series on Friday in Omaha, Neb.
