Pierzynski serves one-game suspension

Associated Press

CHICAGO — Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski dropped his appeal and served a one-game suspension today for his conduct during a game against the New York Yankees last week.

Pierzynski pounded the plate with his bat in disgust after striking out in the eighth inning Thursday and said something to home plate umpire Bob Davidson, who ejected him. Pierzynski then flipped his helmet back at the plate.

He probably would not have played today against Houston with left-hander Wandy Rodriguez starting for the Astros.

"It's good for him to do it now because in the National League we're going to need him," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Chicago opens a three-game series at Philadelphia tomorrow and then visits Pittsburgh.
