Wie finishes last in LPGA by 10 shots, earns $3,273

Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a final-round 7-over-par 79 today, finishing on the wrong end of the scoreboard at the LPGA Championships in Havre de Grace, Md.

Wie's four-round total was 21-over 309, the worst by 10 shots among the 84 players who made the cut.

Wie, who shot 11-over 83 yesterday, managed two birdies but that was offset by five bogeys and two double bogeys in a 39-40 round. Her scores for the tournament were 73-74-83-79.

Not counting last week's round in which she withdrew, Wie has been at or over par in her past 20 rounds. In her last nine rounds against men, she has failed to break 76. In her last 13 rounds against the women, she has failed to break par. She last broke into the 60s in the final round (68) of the Evian in France July 29.

Her 83 yesterday was her worst round in four years.

But Wie completed an acrimonious stay at Bulle Rock with a small consolation — her first performance-based paycheck of the year, worth $3,273.

"It's a good feeling to get a paycheck," she said with a laugh.

Then again, she had to make an 8-foot bogey putt on the final hole to break 80, and her 309 was the highest 72-hole score of her career, professional or amateur.

"I think it was a good decision (to play), but also maybe a couple of weeks too early," Wie said. "I have to test the waters sometime. I felt like this week is a lot better than last week, and I hope the U.S. Open is going to be a lot better."

The Women's Open is in two weeks at Pine Needles.
