Manchester United wants to sign Argentina striker Carlos Tevez from West Ham, newspapers including the Mail reported today.

Talks have taken place between "high-ranking" Old Trafford officials and representatives of the 23-year-old, the Mail said, and the deal may initially be on a loan basis for at least a year.

"Hijacking" of a possible Tevez sale to Liverpool would eclipse United's recent spending of 50 million pounds ($98 million) on Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson, the Mail added.

Tevez played a key role in saving the Hammers from relegation last season, although the club was fined 5.5 million pounds for irregularities in the signing of Tevez and Javier Mascherano last year.
