Bjorn Borg, the 11-time Grand Slam tennis champion, was forced to skip a grass-court exhibition tournament in Liverpool, England, this week after he was bitten by a dog.

The Swede was bitten on the right leg by a friend's dog at a barbecue in Stockholm yesterday and had to be taken to hospital, the Liverpool event said on its Web site. A doctor gave him antibiotics and he was told he shouldn't put any weight on the leg for six weeks.

"It's unbelievable," the five-time Wimbledon champion said. "What are the chances of being bitten by a dog three days before a tournament?"

The 51-year-old was due to line up against players including 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash of Australia and France's Cedric Pioline, a Grand Slam finalist. He still plans to meet his fans in Liverpool.
