Police have opened an arson investigation into a fire that damaged an public-housing apartment unit yesterday in Kalihi.

A suspect fled the scene of the 8:22 a.m. fire at 802 Waiakamilo Road and was still at large.

A witness told police the tenants of the unit were involved in an argument before the fire started. A man was seen fleeing, police said.

Investigators determined a propane torch was used to ignite bedding in the master bedroom, police said. The unit is part of a a state Public Housing Authority project.

Fire department spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha said damage was estimated at $10,000 to the building and $3,000 to the apartment's contents.
