12-year-old youngest to qualify for U.S. Women's Open

HEATHROW, Fla. — Twelve-year-old Alexis Thompson, of Coral Springs, Fla., became the youngest player to ever qualify for the U.S. Women's Open today, besting the previous mark set by Morgan Pressel by seven months.Thompson shot rounds of 72 and 71 in sectional qualifying at the par-72 Heathrow Country Club course and was one of eight players to earn a spot in the 156-player field for the Women's Open to be played June 28-July 1 at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
Fifteen-year-old Vicky Hurst, of Melbourne, Fla., won medalist honors at the Heathrow qualifier with a 7-under 137 total.
Thompson qualified at the age of 12 years, 4 months and 1 day. Pressel was 12 years, 11 months and 21 days old when she qualified for the 2001 Women's U.S. Open.
Pressel became the youngest player to win an LPGA major in April when she won the Nabisco Championship at 18.
