Pop darling The Shins to play Pipeline Cafe July 23

By Derek Paiva

Indie pop darlings The Shins are Honolulu bound for a July 23 show at Pipeline Cafe.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show will go on sale at 9 a.m. on June 20, online at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 877-750-4400, at Pipeline Cafe and all Ticketmaster outlets.

Tickets are $25 general admission and $30 for Tiki Lounge views.

After seven years making its name on the underground scene with near-constant touring, The Shins finally hit big critically and commercially in 2003 with its second album "Chutes Too Narrow." The band earned further pop culture buzz when actor Zach Braff placed several Shins tunes — including "New Slang" and "Caring Is Creepy" in his 2004 directorial debut "Garden State." The film's screenwriter and lead actor, Braff even had his onscreen paramour — played by Natalie Portman, no less — declare that listening to "Slang" will "change your life, I swear."

All the attention certainly changed the band's career trajectory.

Released earlier this year, The Shins third disc "Wincing the Night Away" proved a more instant critical and commercial success, debuting at No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart. By comparison, "Chutes Too Narrow" had peaked at No. 86.

The band's Pipeline Cafe show will be its first in Hawai'i.
