Awards seek to recognize culture

Advertiser Staff

Got culture? Authentic Hawaiian culture?

Beginning tomorrow, if you know of a business, community organization or individual in Hawai'i or abroad that provides visitors and/or residents with opportunities to experience authentic Hawaiian culture, the Hawai'i Tourism Authority wants to hear from you.

The Hawai'i Tourism Authority's 16th Annual Keep It Hawai'i Recognition Awards is accepting nominations until the deadline of July 25.

Members of the Hawai'i Tourism Authority's Hawaiian Cultural Program Advisory Council will judge nominations on authenticity, usage, uniqueness, educational value, longevity, and commitment to the future.

Award recipients will be announced at a ceremony Aug. 28 at the 2007 Hawai'i Tourism Conference.

The awards honor individuals, community organizations and businesses for:

  • Demonstrating commitment to honor and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and community by strengthening the relationship between the visitor industry and the Hawaiian community, and

  • Creative and responsible efforts to showcase Native Hawaiian culture, presenting or providing visitors and residents with opportunities to experience the authentic culture.

The awards will be given in three categories (Business, Individual and Organization) for each island (Hawai'i, Kaua'i, Lana'i, Maui, Moloka'i and O'ahu) and for out-of-state. One recipient may receive the Koa Award, which was created to recognize a long-term and exemplary commitment to perpetuating and preserving Hawai'i's host culture.

The authority's Hawaiian Cultural Program Advisory Council, a group of Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners and supporters, will review the nominations and select the winners. Members include Peter Apo, founding member of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association; "Brother Noland" Conjugacion, a musician, artist and teacher; Walter Jamieson, dean of the School of Travel Industry Management at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa; Robbie Kaholokula, a Kaua'i County tourism specialist; Cheryl L.
