Man, 49, identified in fatal Kihei crash

The Maui News

WAILUKU — A 49-year-old man who died of injuries suffered in a traffic collision in Kihei last month has been identified as Kihei resident James White, The Maui News reported.

Police said he died Friday at Queen's Medical Center on Oahu, where he had been hospitalized in critical condition following the May 27 crash.

The three-vehicle collision was reported at 3:50 p.m. on Piilani Highway about one-third of a mile south of Ohukai Road.

White was driving a 2000 Acura Integra that was heading toward Wailea when his vehicle was struck by a 2005 Pontiac Vibe that crossed the centerline while traveling in the opposite direction, police said. The impact sent the Acura into the oncoming lane, where it collided with a northbound 2000 Ford Focus, police said.

That crash on Piilani Highway preceded a fatal collision Sunday afternoon on another stretch of the highway near Alanui Ke Alii Road.

The 4:52 p.m. crash killed Jerry Killough, 68, of Oklahoma City, who was driving a 2007 Ford Taurus that was heading toward Wailea when it was struck by a northbound 2005 Nissan Frontier crew cab truck that crossed the centerline, police said. The truck was driven by a 22-year-old Wailuku man, who was treated for injuries and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Four passengers, including a 4-month-old boy who was in a car seat in the truck, remained hospitalized Tuesday, police said. The infant remained in critical condition at an Oahu hospital, police said, while his 20-year-old mother was in fair condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Killough's 63-year-old wife remained in critical condition at an Oahu hospital, and the couple's 14-year-old grandson was in critical condition at the Wailuku hospital, police said.

The traffic death Sunday was the 12th this year in Maui County, compared with eight at the same time last year.
