Honolulu fares well when it comes to commuting
Advertiser Staff
More people in Honolulu walk, ride public transit, bike or carpool to work compared to most other large U.S. cities, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data.
The agency reported driving to work remains the favorite of commuters nationwide, with nearly nine out of every 10 workers using this means of travel. An examination of the figures shows Honolulu does well when it comes to choosing other methods, though.
This includes:
10 percent of workers in Honolulu use public transit, ranking the city No. 15 in use. The biggest public transit city was New York, where almost 55 percent of people use public transit, according to Census Bureau data.
Walking was a favored means of transport for 6.9 percent of commuters here. That ranked Honolulu No. 6 in this category. Boston was tops with 12.5 percent.
Riding a bicycle was only used by 1.4 percent of Honolulu's working population. But that was good for ninth in the nation. In Portland, which was No. 1 in this, 3.5 percent rode a bike.
Carpooling was used by 15.6 percent of Honolulu's commuters, ranking the state No. 4 in this category. Nationally, 10.76 percent of folks carpool to work.
