Del Monte fined for improper pesticides use at Kunia

Advertiser Staff

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it has fined Del Monte Fresh Produce Co. $24,640 for improper use of pesticides.

The produce company allegedly misused Telone II, Assure II and Diazinon 50 W Pro at its Kunia pineapple operation in 2004 and 2005.

This misuse reportedly included failing to follow label directions regarding applications and use precautions to protect workers and the environment, the EPA said in a news release.

The agency said the Hawai'i's Department of Agriculture discovered 28 violations during inspections after workers complained.

Del Monte Fresh Produce no longer grows pineapple here, having abruptly shut down the operation in November, saying it wasn't financially feasible to keep farming the property.
