Pearl Harbor lauded for health, safety excellence

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard "Star" status for excellence in health and safety in the workplace.

"Star" status is the highest rating attainable under OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs, the shipyard said. The rate of employee injuries and illnesses at protection program sites are typically less than half the average of their respective industries.

The approval makes the shipyard the only Defense Department facility in the Islands to currently rate the distinction, the shipyard said.

"This is truly an honor for the shipyard," said Capt. Frank Camelio, commander of the shipyard. "My sincere thanks to all who worked so hard to make this possible."

In April, a 10-person OSHA team conducted a weeklong review of the shipyard's safety and health practices.

The shipyard is the state's largest industrial employer, with a combined civilian and military workforce of about 4,740. In fiscal 2006, it had an operating budget of $505 million.
