Boxing champ Toney tests positive for steroids

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Three-time boxing champion James Toney tested positive for steroid use and could face a year's suspension, officials said.

The California State Athletic Commission announced Tuesday that Toney and Danny Batchelder, his opponent in a May 24 heavyweight fight, both tested positive for steroids.

Toney, who won the San Jose bout in a split decision, tested positive for boldenone and stanazolol, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Batchelder tested positive for stanazolol and oxandolone.

"We have a detailed anti-doping program in place in this state," commission Executive Director Armando Garcia told the newspaper. "If they come here doping, they're going to get caught."

Pending appeal, both fighters were notified that they will face one-year suspensions and fines of up to $2,500 each, Garcia said.

Toney's record is 70-6-3, with 43 knockouts. Batchelder is 25-5-1, with 12 knockouts.

Toney, 38, is a former International Boxing Federation middleweight, super-middleweight and cruiserweight champion.

He tested positive for steroid use two years ago and it cost him a title fight victory. The 2005 fight with World Boxing Council heavyweight champion John Ruiz was ruled a no-contest after Toney tested positive for nandrolone.
